Phone Shaun Walsh on 01749 812298. 23 December 2008 Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our members and all the cycling enthusiasts in theYeovil area. Weather permitting, and assuming everyone has recovered from the festive over indulgance, there will be a ride on Sunday 28 December, destination and timing to suit those that turn up. A quick apology from the 'deputy' runs leader for a no-show on Sunday, I did start out but gear failure in Queen Camel which took an hour to fix meant I didn't make it in. But I did get some miles in and saw a number of riders out and about. Here's to a warm, dry and still 2009, with lots of trouble-free cycling miles. The 2008 Bower Hinton Bike Ride raised nnearly £4,000 for the Orchid Cancer Appeal. Orchid is the only UK registered cancer charity to focus entirely on the male-specific cancers prostate and testicular cancer, and exists to save lives by funding medical research and raising awareness about these diseases. The money was raised via the second Bower Hinton Bike Ride and cyclists took part from all over the South West. “Support for the bike ride has been phenomenal this year” said organiser Andy Robinson, “people have travelled from all over Somerset, as well as from Dorset, Devon, Wiltshire, Essex and beyond to take part, and I have been totally overwhelmed by their support”. Held in September this year, this was the second Bower Hinton Bike Ride which has now raised a total of £6, 174.46 for Orchid. 77 cyclists took part this year. “Orchid is such an important charity” Andy added “men are generally not that open when it comes to talking about medical issues, and therefore people are dying, unnecessarily, because of embarrassment and ignorance. The Bower Hinton Bike Ride is an annual event aimed at raising awareness of the issues as well as raising money, enabling men to be open about these things”

Team of the Year :- GB Cycling Team. Sports Personality of the Year :- Chris Hoy. Chris' victory was by a huge margin too, Chris Hoy 283,630 votes, Lewis Hamilton 163,864, Rebecca Adlington 145,924, Ben Ainslie 35,472, Joe Calzaghe 34,077, Andy Murray 19,415, Nicole Cooke 18,256, Christine Ohuruogu 7,677, Bradley Wiggins 5,633, Rebecca Romero 4,526. Now as soon as this cold weather clears we can all get back out on our bikes, and perhaps convert some of the voters into real cyclists! 9 December 2008 TOUR OF VALENCIA 2009 SPECIAL! He has the use of his arms and shoulders and was able to tentatively move his wheelchair under his own power but he obviously has a long way to go before he can think about returning home. He looks set to stay on the ward at least until Christmas. "He was remarkably positive about everything and it was good to see him" said Hugo. 12 October 2008 Club hill climb. BA14 0UW 19 September 2008 Evening TT Series Yet another season draws to a close. In a year that has seen more than its fair share of wet and windy days we finally had a warm, dry evening and several riders took full advantage by posting their best time of the year. Nicki Morgan knocked over 35 seconds off her time to finish well inside her target of 15 minutes. Andy Gaylard put the new bike to good use and got ever nearer to a 12 minute time. Adele found a real injection of pace and reduced her best time by 45 seconds. Clare followed her daughter with a 14 second improvement. Whilst Ricky, Lawrie, Ray, and Doug all made an improvement too. Results. London to Paris by John Williams. Sixty-five of us cycled from London to Paris over 4 days at the end of August to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Between us we have currently raised enough money to pay for a Macmillan nurse for 18 months with money still coming in. It's still possible for people to sponsor up until the end of November. If people would like to sponsor me they can do so at http://www.justgiving.com/macmillanlondon2paris We did a few extra miles as the kids in the towns and villages thought it was a great laugh to turn the arrows around that marked the route we had to follow! We ate 8Kg of Jelly Babies in 3 days! I now know that they are rocket fuel for cyclists! Why Macmillan? Well obviously in memory of the people that I know who have died of cancer and also to raise money to help those who are going through a difficult time right now.

Cyclo-Cross on Paignton’s North Green Friday 17th August.
Road Circuit Races around Paignton’s North Green Tony White. For those of us that have been in the club for more years than we care to remember you will no doubt remember Tony. Sadly he died last week, after a long illness he was showing signs of recovering but then relapsed. A tester, his name still remains against several club records, and runs leader for many years he was always a keen rider. Our thoughts and condolences go to his widow Dawn. The funeral is on Tuesday at 1:30, at this home in Cole. If you are going to attend please can you let David Notley know, 07525 900718, as space is limited and we are trying to arrange some car sharing.

Looking at the times this has the feel of a truly old fashioned results sheet thanks to the strong winds, even with all our high-tech equipment there is no overcoming a breeze like that. 26 June. 20 June 2008 Evening TT Series The first 'Come and Try It' of the season saw a good crowd of riders competing on the five course. It was a true family affair, the Martin v Walsh v Vince v Loader v Gibbs v Ward! Not quite sure how you pick a winner from that lot. There is another CATI event in july so if you would like to invite any friends or colleagues along then start persuading them now. The results for this wekk and last week are here: 19 June 12 June.
16 June 2008 John Andrews Memorial Road Race On a warm, dry day we had yet another good race. Several attacks on the testing little circuit, with riders managing to clip off the front and eventually forming a break of 9 which built up a good lead Will Jansen and Ben Anstie sprinting at the top of the rise to the finish, the Bikinmotion rider getting it from the Chippenham Wheeler. The road was closed for well over 2 hours and Paul was taken off to hospital in an ambulance. Initially the police coned the road down to one lane so riders went past as the ambulance people were attending to Paul. The race was then stopped (the first 20 or so riders having completed the course). The latest news is that Paul sustained serious, but not life threatening injuries. Results. 30 April 2008 Update from Shaun. "Many thanks to everyone who has sent me good wishes for a speedy recovery." Here's what happened, I was riding through Sutton Veny when a car pulled out on the left and myself, Mike Donovan and Adrian Wyncoll all went over the bonnet, three bikes on one side and three bodies on the other. I was air lifted to Bath Hospital and found to have crushed and broken a bone in my back, oh did I mention the excruciating pain. I am now home and wearing a back brace, which allows me a great deal of mobility but is the most uncomfortable thing you can imagine. I am allowed to start turbo training in six weeks and back on the road after three months, can’t wait. I shall be cycling on holiday in the French hills in training for the National Hill Climb in October. Thanks again to all and see you soon. 25 April 2008 Evening TT Series. Yet again Wessex Water made a surprise visit to our course and erected traffic lights, so the event was cancelled for a second week. Back to the 10 course next week so let's hope for a better result. The good news is that Shaun has now been released from hospital, the bad news is he will have to wear a back brace for six weeks, and may well be off the bike for several months. Of his two cycling companions one escaped with severe bruising whilst the other has a damaged finger which was operated on yesterday. The police are taking a keen interest in the case, not least because one of the riders is a policeman! We wish all three riders a speedy recovery. 21 April 2008 Shaun Walsh. We have just had the news that Shaun is in Bath Hospital, he has a broken bone in his back following a collison with a car whilst out riding on Sunday morning. It is 11:00, the rain is still quite hard and it is cold and very windy, the forecast, depending on which one you watch, has the rain clearing and the wind dropping slightly. If it does clear the event can go ahead, if not then it is most likely to be cancelled. It is not going to be possible to make that decision until nearer the start time. Sorry we cannot be more specific at the moment. A reminder that you need to get your entry in promptly if you want to ride either the Pittards or Ham Hill road races or the Open 10. 9 March 2008 Sunday Club Runs Despite the weatherman's forecast of doom and gloom earlier in the week the two club runs enjoyed a beautiful ride out to Broadwindsor. One run did a loop through Stoke, Over Stratton, Dinnington and then cut across Windwhistle to Clapton whilst the longer ride swung out to Broadway and up over Cricket Malherbie to Birdsmoorgate. Great timing again saw us meet at the Craft Centre to enjoy a well earned bit of cake and then the runs split with the social ride coming back to Winyards Gap and through to Sutton Bingham whilst the faster riders went back to Clapton and Crewkerne before swinging across to Stoke and into Yeovil. For anyone heading in the Wells direction there is a new cafe at Brownes Garden Centre south of Wells on the A39 heading to Glastonbury. A few more details are on their website, www.brownes-gc-coffeeshop.co.uk 3 March 2008 Sunday Club Runs Thanks to everyone that came along and supported the new Club run on Sunday. The revised format worked well with both groups arriving at the coffee stop within five minutes of each other. The 'social run' did a steady ride of about 38 miles out through Ash and Barrington, through to Isle Brewers and Wrantage arriving at North Curry for coffee and cake. The faster riders covered about 55 miles taking a longer loop out through Broadway and Curland before heading for North Curry. The groups also took a slightly different route home, but we were all back in time for Mothers Day lunch. If you have been put off by the speed or distance you no longer have an excuse, so come and join us next Sunday and see some of the best countryside and enjoy the company of your fellow riders. 26 February 2008 Membership reminder. Your membership subs for 2008 were due on 1 January, if you have not yet paid Mike Loader can you please let him have them soon, if they are not in by early April you will have to pay an extra £3! There is a list of current members on the Membership page. 20 February 2008 Open 25 We have had to reschedule the Yeovil CC Open 25, as it clashed with the Yeovilton Air Day weekend. It will now take place on Sunday 27th July, all other details remain the same. 19 February 2008 ROYAL NAVY & ROYAL MARINES CYCLING ASSOCIATION 18 February 2008 Club Runs Starting on Sunday 2 March there will be a new Club run each week aimed at the intermediate rider. Covering about 45 miles, with a leisurely coffee stop, and at a pace to suite the whole group. It is the intention that the faster training ride will take a longer but faster paced route and both groups will meet at the coffee stop. We are also talking to Wessex Wizards, a newly formed group that have a more leisurely ride each Sunday, to see if we can team up with them to offer an option for those that want to either move up, or down a level. If you are slogging round the roads on your own on a Sunday morning? then why not come and join the Sunday runs, it is so much more social, safer and enjoyable. If you need to be back for a particular time then there are plenty of opportunities to peel of and return home. We are also considering an early ride once a month, starting at 08:00 and returning for 11:00, specifically aimed at those that want to get home for family commitments, if you are interested then please come along to one of the usual Sunday runs and we will get it organised if there is enough interest. 14 February 2008 CYCLE SOMERSET, CYCLE JUMBLE In Aid of St Margaret’s Hospice. The total distance is 102km, with 1955m of climb, including quite a few steep hills, and a lot of rather rural lanes (the climbing has been re-calculated since last year). If you want some early Étape training this is for you; it is rather more adventurous than a club run... A gear lower than 39 x 21, and mudguards, are advised. Starting from Corscombe village hall at 9am, the route goes northwards to East Coker, then to Powerstock (40km) for refreshments at the Three Horseshoes. It then climbs Eggardon Hill on the way to Cerne Abbas (62km) where you can stoke up again. Leaving Cerne by Piddle Lane, you head to Mappowder and then turn back to Corscombe via the road along Batcombe Hill. Entry costs £5 payable to Arthur Vince (£7 for those not individual members of AUK, CTC or BC) and includes free food at the hall. Entries must be made on the current Audax UK form, available on the AUK website (www.audax.uk.net) or from the organiser: Arthur Vince (arthur.vince@btinternet.com), 3 Back Lane, East Coker, Yeovil, BA22 9JN, tel. 01935 863429. The entry limit is 55, first come first served, and entries are in already, so don’t delay if you want a place. Club Buffet. This sponsored event forms part of a special fund raising day that is organised to raise money for the Orchid Cancer Appeal, Orchid exists to save men's lives from testicular, prostate and penile cancers through pioneering research and promoting awareness. There are 3 routes to choose from; 30, 15 or 7.5 miles and the next ride takes place on Sunday 7 September 2008. Full details can be found at www.bowerhintonride.co.uk or by contacting Andy Robinson. Whilst it's a non-competitive event, people do pride themselves on their times. I appreciate that this is early notice, as the ride does not take place until September, but I would appreciate any help and support you can provide in publicising this event. Please share it with your cycle club members, family and friends. 1 January 2008 Happy New Year to you all.
