27 August Evening TT Series If it isn’t windy then it has to be wet. The dull and damp conditions didn’t deter the dozen riders that turned out – I know it only says eleven above but Doug Ward very generously gave up his ride to marshal – and we even had a tie for first place. Results

23 August Evening TT Series The predicted torrential rain never made it as far as us, but the poor light would have made it too risky to run the scheduled 10. For the few optimists that came we were able to run a 5. Results

19 August Evening TT Series The forecast for tonight is for heavy rain from late afternoon, if it is on schedule then the 10 will be cancelled. If it is heavy rain then we will not run a five either, in which case "see you next week".

6 August Evening TT Series Another warm evening and another strong wind on the outward leg which didn't give much help on the way back. And it would seem that Tandems are just like buses, you never see them then two turn up at once! A great turn out and pleasing to see some more new competitors. Just a reminder that we are back to a 6:45 start next week. Results

Peter Tindley

2 August CC Weymouth member, Peter Tindley, 76, died after he struck a broken-down car while competing in a 50-mile race yesterday morning. He was competing for CC Weymouth, where he had reigned as veteran champion for a number of years. Peter crashed into the back of a blue Renault Clio. He was nearly three hours into the Bournemouth Jubilee 50-mile time trial when the crash occurred. The road was closed for more than two hours following the collision and a police appeal has been launched to find witnesses.

Bill Simmons, event secretary of the Bournemouth Jubilee said “We are sending all our sympathies and condolences to the family, friends and clubmates of Peter. Until we carry out our own investigation we are not in a position to comment.” Tributes have poured in for divorced Mr Tindley, who only took up cycling when he retired as a British Aerospace project manager.

2 July Evening TT Series Yet another new course is christened and the course record goes to Dave Moffett. There were on or two comments on the safety of the turn where we rejoin the 5 course, namely riders either swinging out too wide (potentially into the path of oncoming traffic) and cutting the corner on the return leg (again potentially into the path of oncoming traffic). For any further events on the course we will insist that riders do not cross the white line or cut the corner – anyone doing so be disciplined depending on the severity of the offence – you have been warned! The race HQ is at RNAS Yeovilton, a lot of the usual Sunday morning club run riders will be helping with the marshalling, but there may still be a club run if enough riders turn out at 9am (it may even come out to the HQ and then on a shorter run from there). 26 June Evening TT Series The next event will be on the new 9 course that we thought we might not be able to use when the roadworks started, but as they are now gone we will give it a try this week and see what the verdict is. HQ is Yeovilton as normal. Course starts near the Health Centre on the West Camel road out of Queen Camel. From the start head back to the HQ and rejoin the five course. Instead of heading out towards the A303 on the return leg the finish is back near the start, so turn next right after the HQ. Results

7 June Taunton based rides from Mike Dennis. On the last day of National Bike Week, 27th June, I will be running loads of rides from Taunton. The idea is to involve as many folk as possible, so there will be family rides from 15 miles upwards, and two great rides for committed cyclists of 63 and 100miles. The 100 miler takes in Cheddar Gorge, the beach between Brean and Burnham, and The Quantocks. Full details are on our website.

The start will be from the Bicycle Chain in Chip Lane, Taunton (gold star start at 9am, other rides from 9-11am ) and route cards for stamping and maps will be provided. Emergency mechanical back-up will be supplied, to encourage less experienced cyclists.

I do hope you will be able to join me on that day, and there will be a superb cyclists’ goody-bag for all riders. Michael Dennis, Environment Directorate, Somerset County Council. Tel: 01823 35 8239 email: mgdennis@somerset.gov.uk

4 June Evening TT Series A lovely summers evening saw the course record fall again. Chris Martin clocked a 12:46, a 28 second improvement on his previous best, but the new record only stood for a few minutes as Mike Loader powered his way around the course in 12:39. Results.

Don't forget that we have two 'Come and Try it' events scheduled in the next few weeks. The first is on Thursday 17 June, and Thursday 15 July. Now that the road works have finished we will be using the Ilchester 5 course with the HQ being the Sports Pavilion at RNAS Yeovilton. Because of the uncertainty about the course and HQ we have not publicised the event as much as normal so please spread the word and persuade a few friends or colleagues to come and have a go.

28 May Evening TT Series The contractors have confirmed that the roadworks on the five course will re-start next week, but the good news is that they will be for one week only and then they are finished, so we can go back to the Yeovilton course. We will have the 'come and try it" event there on the 17 June and can decide whether we want to continue with some events on the Sparkford circuit.

The strong Northerly breeze did little to help and more to hinder so it was a tough night. Tom Alliban still managed to put in a sub 22 minute ride, whilst Mike Loader was the highest placed Yeovil rider. Results

25 May Weekend Results Thanks to Hugo for the following round up. Wales obviously agrees with Chris Martin who got a new 25 mile pb improving on last years 56.30 with 55.49 this time round on the same course. Was this a 10 and 25 mile pb for Martyn Whitmarsh on consecutive days? Not bad for one weekend! Alex should be ducking back under the 23 minute mark for 10 miles in another 13 races based the weekends results.

23 May YCC pair claim National Record Dave Driver and Shaun Walsh claimed a Tandem national age group record on Saturdayon the P613/10. 30 April BC Training Oppurtunity British Cycling are offering the opportunity to train club members as the regions future event organisers and commissaries. By participating in these one day training sessions you will be laying the foundations to cater for the demand that now exists in the South West. You do not have to be a seasoned road racer to volunteer and your commitment can be limited to two weekends a year. Training courses can be organised where there is demand and there are no costs involved to participate. To have a look at some of the work that has already been carried out with South West clubs and the support that your Regional team and workgroup can offer you visit these links: Training, Commissaire. 22 April Clothing Sale As a thank you to everyone that has helped with the club promotions over the years the club has decided to spend some of the profit we have made on the road races and time trials on subsidising the clothing.
Firstly we are going to reduce the cost of the road vests we are ordering from Kalas to £25. If you have ordered one you will get it at the reduced price, if you did not order one but would like one please can you let me know as soon as possible (01963 440291) as this is a one time offer and will not be repeated once the initial order of clothing is sold. Kalas have also offered a free pair of socks to everyone that is ordering clothing too. The discount has also increased a little so the costs of the final garments will be a little less than originally quoted.
Secondly we are going to cut the cost of the ProVision clothing we have in stock. This will not be replaced so it is a first come first serve basis and once it is gone that will be it. In stock we currently have:

Road Vests £20.00 (were £31)

The top three were followed by Dave Moffett (1st Chard Wheelers) 21:35 and Simon Baynes (Giant CC) and Andrew Legge (Bristol South CC) tied for 5th on 22:14. The highest placed Yeovil rider was Chris Martin at 22:33 just 10 seconds ahead of scratch man Michael Loader also from the host club. 15 April Road Race Results Better late than never. Firstly thanks to everyone from the club that helped to make these two races such a well run and exciting event. Ever aspect of the race was praised by all concerned, from the riders to the Commissaires. Both races were more or less incident free thanks to the efficient marshalling and the three National Escort Group motorcycles we had on each race, which meant the riders could concentrate on what they do best, racing. Both races were quick and highly competitive with constant attacks and small breaks.

Anthony Morris and Mark Plummer were the first YCC competitors in several years, unforetunately Anthony was ill and could not start, but Mark did survive until the last lap when in a very selfless gesture he helped a fellow rider who had unshipped his chain, but they were then unable to regain contact with the main bunch. Not a good tactic for winning but a great advert for the Club!

5 April 2010 Evening TT Series The 2010 series starts here, even if it felt like winter still. The rain held off just long enough to let most riders finish in the dry but the cold and strong wind hardly made it a great start. The new evening TT course has been submitted for approval. It is a six mile circuit starting and finishing in Sparkford. The plan is to use the course instead of the 5 and 9 mile events, running a 6 or 12 respectively instead. HQ is under consideration. There are two options for the finish, the first is at the start area, or the layby opposite the Little Weston turning for an extra mile. The 10 mile events will run as scheduled.

16 March Evening TT Series and Road Race Road Works. For those that have travelled past the camp in the last few days you may have seen the sign which warns of 'Road works for the next 4 months'. There is a new gas main being laid from Ilchester to the camp, it is being done in 200m sections controlled by traffic lights. This is going to severely disrupt our TT series, only the 10 course will remian useable. We are urgently investigating options. The opening event on 1 April will take place as normal by which time we hope to have an update for you all.

The Pittards and Ham Hill events may well have traffic lights on the course but we are hopeful that the contractor is going to have an operator present on the day to control the lights in the race's favour.

TVCRA. The new season is not far away and here are the main points you ned to know:

1. There is no requirement for a racing licence or BC membership to participate in the Tuesday evening training sessions. It is however recommended that riders have some sort of insurance to provide cover in the event of any accident. Racing licences required as normal for open events.
2. Each TVCRA club will be required to pay an affiliation fee for the season; £25 <8 participating club members, £50 >8 participating club members.
3. Each particpating member will be required to pay a fee for the seasons Tuesday evening sessions as follows: £25 - Adults, £15 - Under 18, £10 - Under 16, £35 - Family
4. Tuesday evening sessions will run from 20 Apr - 31 Aug 2010.
5. The TVCRA is in the process of purchasing a gazebo for use as a 'signing-on' tent
6. Portaloo toilet facilities will be hired for use at Ilton for the season.
7. Each member club will be required to co-ordinate a share of the Tuesday evening sessions - YCC have been allocated sessions during August.
8. Due to a tightening of regulations at Ilton, all riders and supporters will be required to show a pass to enter the airfield. Application for membership will be co-ordinated by respective club reps. Our's is Mark Plummer. In essence the rule will be ' No pass - No ride'.
9. A National Junior Road Race Series Race sponsored by TVCRA will take place on 18 April 2010 - Race HQ, Somerton. Closing date for entries is 2 April 2010. The organiser, Mark Deakin, is trying to get a South West regional team together - and a training session is planned for 10 April 2010. Volunteers for marshals are required. Any volunteers will receive discounted entry on TVCRA events.

Clothing. We have a small design problem which we are trying to overcome. This has led to a delay in the order being placed. As soon as we have a delivery date you will be notified, but it is likely to be late April now. If that causes anyone a problem please let me know and we will see what we can do to assist. David Notley.

Caution Tarmac

Riders stopped at one point to admire one of the few sections of tarmac.

Primrose Path Thanks to Hugo for the following: Arthur and Christine organised another enjoyable edition of the Primrose Path audax ride which luckily was totally ice free this year. Early drizzle soon disappeared and light winds and some sunshine ensured the ride was a pleasant tour of Dorset's more scenic and hilly back roads.

For less than the price of a typical open time trial the riders received great value for money with over 5 hours of riding including over 6000 feet of climbing with some of Christine's delicious home made quiche, beans on toast, cakes and other foods at the finish all included in the price. A great way to boost that winter base training!

Lane ahead

More typical road conditions on the first half of the route.

17 January 2010 Tuesday Training Sessions. There will be a training ride around Yeovil every Tuesday evening, starting this week. Meet at the Sports Club at 7pm. The ride will be around a circuit in Yeovil, all of which will be streetlit, so lights will be required to ensure you can be seen but not to see where you are going. Provided the rides are well supported they will continue until the Merryfield sessions start in April. The length and intensity of the training rides will depend on the riders on the evening. As it is a circuit if it is too fast or too long it will be easy to opt out at any stage.

10 January 2010 Club clothing night cancelled. We have decided to cancel the event for tomorrow night as whilst the Yeovil residents may be able to get there the members living in the outlying villages may not. The clothing samples will now be available at our February meeting. That will take place on Monday 8 February, so please make a note in your diary now.

Looks like you might have to add Hovis to your diet now, to go with the Chris Hoy Bran Flakes, have a look at this link.

9 January 2010 A decision on the club night will be made on Sunday, it rather depends on the snow which is forecast for Sunday. If it looks as though it will be difficult, or dangerous, for members to get to the Sports Club then we will postpone the event until February. The update will be posted here on Sunday evening.
